A Critical Literature Review(CARI Journals, 2022-10-08) Muriuki MarksonPurpose: Drought prediction practices entail observing behavior of certain animals, plants, trees, winds, clouds, temperature changes and other natural phenomena at the local level. The overall objective of this study was to examine ancient drought prediction and receptiveness practices among communities' influence on food security. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: This study concluded that the interaction between the local indigenous drought experts and the formal meteorologists is central in producing climate forecasts that are meaningful for the local community. The collaboration of the various stakeholders in developing a mitigation plan on curbing food insecurity will ultimately contribute to sustainable livelihoods achieved through appropriate timing of agricultural activities, water saving and post-harvest agro-processing. Sustainable livelihoods and the resultant food security will eventually enable the community achieve sustainable development. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that although farmers listen to meteorological forecasts from radios, among other formal communication media, they also use their AKS to predict droughts. There is need to strengthen the resilience and self-confidence of the local community to cope with drought disasters. This could be achieved through recognition and propagation of indigenous drought prediction and preparedness practices and values. The study also recommends in-depth examination of the invaluable input of the indigenous prediction practices for inclusion in regards to other studies to be done.Item type:Item, Provenance of Food Insecurity. A Critical Literature Review(CARI Journals, 2022-10-08) Makrini Kamunywe Makrini JiletPurpose: In particular, it affects crop production due to temperature and rainfall changes, and more extreme weather events. Erratic rainfall and temperatures are said to reduce crop yields through shortening growing seasons, exaggeration of water stress and promote invasion and intensity of weeds, pests and diseases. The overall objective of this study was to examine provenance of food insecurity. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: This study concluded that the effects of rainfall and temperature adversely affect to maize and beans production in Africa. The effects are significant and positive for all crops. Generally, there is better correlation of production with precipitation than temperature. From the findings Pearson's correlation showed positive correlation for crop yields against climate data except for minimum temperature that exhibited weak negative correlation for maize and no correlation for beans. This shows plainly that "business as usual" food grain growth is altered by changes in climate. These changes could alter growing seasons, planting and harvesting calendars or even invasion of pests, weeds and diseases. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that adoption of other food grains that may do well under this current climatic condition. Crops such as millet and sorghum are encouraged due to their high tolerance to droughts, soil infertility and high temperatures. Households also to be guided on how to monitor crop-climate relationship so as to achieve improved crop production drought resistant modern seed varieties are very important to the population.Item type:Item, Influence of Native Commutable Approaches to Climate Dispositions among Pastoralist in Nigeria. A Critical Literature Review(CARI Journals, 2022-10-08) Mwamberi AlfonsoPurpose: Complementary sources of income, sex of household heads, age of the household head, number of dependents, illiteracy, early warning information, employment status, and weak institutional structures determine vulnerability to climate variability and affect pastoralists. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of indigenous adaptive capacity strategies to climate variability in Nigeria. A critical literature review Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: This study concluded that traditional mechanisms of predicting weather in Nigeria include observing the movement of clouds, wildlife, and domestic animals, observing intestines after slaughter, flowering and greening trees, and observing stars. The climate variability coping strategies among Nigerian pastoralists is eating less (9.9%), depending on food aid (42.8%), migrating to other areas (0.7%), and selling livestock (11.2%). These coping strategies increase the risk of being vulnerable to climatic shocks. The decline of food yields, loss of income, livestock death, poor access to water and pasture, and the death of loved ones are the main effects of climatic shocks. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that the Government in Nigeria should also improve the cash transfer programs. Insurance programs will also benefit the pastoralists because they will cushion them against harsh climatic conditions. The government should also introduce better livestock rearing projects such as stall-fed and pasture grazing. Moreover, value addition programs for livestock and livestock diversification, such as donkeys' introduction in the area for sale, milk, and cultivation, will be essential.Item type:Item, Influence of Climate Change on the Spread Newcastle Disease in Africa. A Critical Literature Review(Cari Journals, 2022-10-08) Mwamberi AlfonsoPurpose: Newcastle Disease is a disease that is virulently caused by a form of avian Paramyxovirus type-1 virus that affects the respiratory systems of wild birds and poultry. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of climate change on the spread Newcastle Disease in Africa. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: This study concluded that that farmers should be encouraged to keep poultry chicken depending on their capacity. Thus, there is a need to capacitate farmers' knowledge and participate in decision-making. Most of the adaptation measures can reduce negative impacts of climate change such as improved breeding, use of improved feedings, and burying the infected chicken. However, adaptation was taken into account but there were some challenges faced by farmers such as high cost of vaccinations; inconsistent forecasts of Newcastle Disease spread; lack of training; lack of enough funds; lack of information facilities; drug resistance; ignorance of farmers; culture and misconceptions. Finally, farmers should take more precautions of using vaccines against Newcastle Disease. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that the national government should devolve and set up weather stations at local levels to help the community monitor and forecast changes in temperatures and rainfall to help them take precautions against adverse climatic events, known as a precautionary principle for community preparation. The devolved and national governments are urged to strategize and provide extension services to farmers periodically to create awareness and technical guidance on dealing with Newcastle disease such as handling and taking hygiene precautions.Item type:Item, Effect of Ambient Temperatures on Dairy Production in Africa. A Critical Literature Review(CARI Journals, 2022-10-08) Mutembei JosiahPurpose: Dairy farming together with crop farming for decades has been a source of livelihood among the rural residents in Africa. The majority of people practice agriculture for capital creation and food security. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of ambient temperatures on dairy production in Africa. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: This study concluded that climate variability was evident in the area with variations in temperature and precipitation. Temperature and precipitation had rose from maximum averages across the years in the past 30 years. From the findings it is arguable that different places with Africa continue to be affected by climate variability. To the dairy productivity, exotic and indigenous dairy breeds are affected differently by climate variability. As per productivity, exotic breeds tend to be least affected unlike indigenous breeds. For instance, some common animal vegetative crops were highly hit and lowly heat by climate variability like Napier grass and natural grass respectively. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that creation of awareness on matters pertaining to temperature and its effects on the dairy sector by the relevant country environmental ministry. This will build capacity about amplified challenges emerging from ambient temperatures to dairy farming. For instance, spread of diseases, delayed fodder growth and hampered animal feeding behavior.Item type:Item, An Algorithm for Predicting Coffee Prices Using ARIMA Model(CARI Journals, 2025-08-13)Purpose: In this study, an algorithm for predicting coffee prices was developed incorporating the ARIMA model.
